Motorola, Inc. was an American multinational telecommunications company based in Schaumburg, Illinois. After losing $ 4.3 billion between 2007 and 2009, on January 4, 2011, the company was split into two independent public companies, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Motorola Solutions is generally considered to be the direct successor to Motorola, Inc. the reorganization was structured so that Motorola Mobility was eliminated.
Motorola has designed and sold wireless network infrastructure equipment such as cellular base stations and signal amplifiers. Motorola's home and broadcast network products included receivers, digital video recorders, and network equipment used for video broadcasting, computer telephony, and high-definition television. Its business and government customers consisted mainly of wireless voice and broadband systems (used to build private networks) and public safety communication systems such as Astro and Dimetra. These companies (except set-top boxes and cable modems) are now part of Motorola’s solution.
Motorola's cordless handset department was a pioneer of cell phones. Prior to 2004, also known as the Personal Communications Sector (PCS), it introduced a “switch phone” with MicroTAC and a “clam phone” with StarTAC in the mid-1990s. In the mid-2000s, he staged an extremely successful revival with RAZR; however, it lost significant market share in the second half of this decade. Recently, it has been focusing on smartphones running Google’s open source Android mobile operating system. The first phone to use the latest version of Google’s open source OS, Android 2.0, was released on November 2, 2009 as the Motorola Droid (the GSM version launched a month later in Europe than the Motorola Milestone). The portable units department (along with cable receivers and cable modems) has since been separated into an independent company, Motorola Mobility. On May 22, 2012, Google CEO Larry Page announced that Google had entered into an agreement to acquire Motorola Mobility.
